Today is international women’s day and I want to take a minute to pay tribute to the incredible women that work hard to help Sound Check Entertainment sparkle.

Whether behind a lens in a pit or behind a keyboard or microphone interviewing artists one thing is certain Sound Check would be nothing without the women that have graced our pages both past and present.

Earlier today we paid tribute to the incredibly talented photographers we have on our team. Believe me when I tell you these ladies are compassionate, welcoming and always happy to work with each other to help make every shoot better than the last.

Many have allowed me to push them out of their comfort zone and have taken a stab at writing when we couldn’t get a writer to a show and still managed to deliver world class photos with their review within a day or two of their show.

These are the ones we see and recognize because their work is visible on all of our platforms and they are hard to miss in the pit at venues with their cameras and lenses pointed at the action on stage.

Theres another equally important group of ladies that you may never notice at a show…and that’s the team of writers we have at Sound Check Entertainment.

Kristen, Samantha, Jenn D, Ann, Emily and Kelly make up our team of regular writers and editors across Canada. These women write many of the reviews that grace our pages and help me edit posts from our team of contributors across Canada.

I also need to give a shout out to our amazing double agents, the few who shoot and review (almost) every show they cover. Laura, who also is one of the editors in Ottawa; Sue, one of our star shooters in Toronto; Kayla, whether it’s a show at Bud Gardens, a local festival or one of the many award shows that has called London home over the years chances are Kayla shot and reviewed it; Back here in Ottawa we’ve recently welcomed the super talented Els into the fold, since joining the team she’s shot and reviewed a number of shows, big and small, and even tried her hand at an interview with, the always amazing, Alan Doyle. Even our lead Ottawa photographer, Renée has tried her hand at writing and (like it or not) didn’t really well with it. I need to give Renée an extra shout-out. As we’ve started taking on more and more shows, and team members, in Ottawa Renée stepped up and helped devise a system to keep things orderly so it was easy to see who was assigned what and which shows are coming up that need someone to cover them. This has allowed me to focus on growing SCE outside of Ontario and building up our first official expansion into the USA.

Equally important are the special women that stand behind the men on this team. They put up with nights alone at home so we can do what we love! Without their love and encouragement this would all be much more difficult, and a whole lot less fun.

To all of the women, past and present that have ever been part of this publication and to the countless women performers who appear in front of our lenses every year we salute you! Happy International Women’s Day!
