Ottawa’s Algonquin Commons Theatre momentarily turned into a Las Vegas night club on Friday when Pauly D, of Jersey Shore fame, brought the beats and the bass to our capital city.

Opening act Teddy Rose, who just returned from a tour in Japan, told the crowd that despite being jet lagged, he was ready to get them warmed up. Rose is a producer/DJ from San Diego California who has a sound that is a mix of future and progressive house music. His most notable release so far has been his remix of “All the Small Things” by Blink 182 which is totaled over 200k plays on Soundcloud. Not just a great haircut, this talented young DJ had the intimate crowd grooving in anticipation of the headliner who would soon take the stage.

Even if you never got sucked in to watching episodes of Jersey Shore, it’s likely that you have heard of the MTV reality show that aired from 2009-2012. The series followed the lives of eight housemates at a vacation home in Seaside Heights, New Jersey. It became a pop culture phenomenon with four of the stars landing their own spin off series. Arguably one of the most entertaining and endearing characters was Paul DelVecchio, also known as Pauly D, a disc jockey from Rhode Island. DelVecchio was nominated for the 2010 “America’s Best DJ” competition and in 2011 was voted Teen Choice Reality Star.

The crowd, mostly made up of twenty-somethings, screamed as he emerged from backstage to take his place behind a screen projecting his name. The comical cartoon graphics of Pauly D’s head that spun on the screen behind him and the colorful lights weren’t the only intense parts of the DJ’s set. Every time Pauly D spun into a new song, he effortlessly crafted each beat and music sample until the pitch reached higher and higher, finally dropping for the crowd to go wild and dance along with him. In his set, he managed to blend hip-hop, EDM, and pop-punk songs as the crowd went wild.
