The National Arts Centre Orchestra welcomed L.A.-based Troupe Vertigo for three nights of jaw-dropping circus-dance-theatre performances accompanied by the fiery music of Emmanuel Chabrier’s España together with sizzling selections from George Gershwin, George Bizet’s Carmen and more.

Troupe Vertigo creates a spellbinding visual spectacular by turning stunning physical feats into choreographed works of art. If you’ve ever been curious about orchestral music before but also hope to find some familiar toe tapping tunes, then the Pops series at the National Arts Centre is exactly what you’re looking for. The Pops series features 6 different shows per season and is the perfect entry point for people into the world of orchestral music. Donning their crisp white jackets and instruments tuned to perfection the orchestra set up on the stage at Southam Hall were led by conductor Jack Everly. Jack Everly is one of the Principal Pops conductors and takes this leadership role only twice in the season.

It was an absolute treat to both watch him command the orchestra as well as the entire hall with his wit and commentary on the music presented. Making musical selections from George Gershwin and the popular music Carmen, among others, the music was both fiery and familiar and the perfect compliment to the jaw dropping athletics of Troupe Vertigo.

The evening was filled with spectacular visuals of physical strength and comedic choreography by the impressive circus dance theatre group from Los Angeles. There were many gasps from the audience throughout the evening when the artists were suspended from the ceiling or juggling tables with their feet. These beautiful and jaw dropping choreographed works of art along with the perfect musical accompaniment left the audience on their feet as the evening ended with a standing ovation for all.
