We caught up with with Halifax naive Ria Mae as part of Juno Week. Ria is nominated for Pop Album of the Year at the 2018 Junos and we were lucky enough to chat with her about her success this past year.

This year for Ria has been incredible and she is taking it all in stride “it’s kinda funny actually the more success there is the busier I am and there’s no time to think which also means no time to be nervous”. Ria explained that “it’s been an absolute whirlwind” since before all of her recent success she was touring around just her and her guitar and booking her own shows and now it’s a completely different world.

Growing up in Halifax she noted that people have extreme success out there far before anyone ever really knows who they are. Ria went on to say with a laugh “ We get all our shitty shows out 2 years before anyone knows about us because we are so far away from everyone its great!”

Ria has been touring and selling out shows in the maritimes for years and was just begging for someone to finally take note of her talent and Sony did just that. Ria said “I had been looking for someone to work with me for so long” when she was first approached by the industry, but went on to say that being so far away from the industry does have it’s advantages when you are able to make all your mistakes before anyone knows about you or sees you.

As far as we’re concerned Ria has burst onto the scene looking like a seasoned professional, no shitty shows here! and we wish her good luck on her Juno nomination.
