Kingston’s music scene is alive and well and The Glorious Sons made that clear Saturday night as thousands packed into Richardson Stadium to see the band once again play their hometown.

There was a buzz in the stadium, and it was immediately evident as you entered. People had waited a long time for this show. They were excited to finally see their favourite band, for some it would be the first time. They were first entertained by Brother Elsey, a trio made up of three brothers, Jack, Brady, and Beau Stablein from Detroit. We didn’t have a chance to see them, but they sounded great from outside.

Matt Mays comes to us from the east coast of Canada and has been playing professionally in one form or another since 1998 and won the Juno for Rock Album Of The Year in 2014 for “Coyote”. His song writing style has gained him attention, being compared to Tom Petty or Gord Downie. His delivery onstage makes him a must see. Kingston has another chance to see Matt soon as he is playing at The Grand Theatre on November 7.

The Glorious Sons are Brett Emmons on harmonica and lead vocal, his brother Jay on guitar and vocals, Chris Koster on guitar and vocals, Chris Huot on Bass and vocals, Adam Paquette on drums and Josh Hewson on keyboards. Together these six musicians have created a sound that audiences love.

It doesn’t seem that long ago when they were opening for the Headstones at what is now Leon’s Centre, and they were making people take notice even then. They have grown in popularity steadily to the point where they received the offer to open for non other than The Rolling Stones………. twice! Now there is something for the resume!

The Glorious Sons have enjoyed a strong following since they first burst onto the scene and Saturday night they did not disappoint! I have seen the band before, but this time was different. This production was something beyond what we have seen from them before.  The lightshow was impressive and unique but the thing that stood out to me was the band themselves. They were “on”, Brett was at his best, he made use of the very large stage, running all over, barefoot as he usually is. He stopped here and there to lean into one of his bandmates and messing their hair before moving on.

The Glorious Sons live show is not a one-person affair by a long shot, they are all dynamic onstage, contributing to the visual impact. Each band member brings something to the table and they do it with complete professionalism. They are like no other band I can think of, setting themselves apart from other bands and that is what it’s all about.
