It has been nearly 10 years since the world-renowned Boston Ballet has visited Ottawa. Under the inspired leadership of Mikko Nissinen, their long overdue return to the National Arts Center, brings an eclectic program that encompasses a jazzy Broadway style piece, a national debut of a contemporary piece and an ensemble piece set to the music of Grammy nominated artist James Blake.

The triple bill begins with Fancy Free; the upbeat jazz piece that is accompanied by the exceptional NAC orchestra. This number features 3 sailors on shore leave and takes you back to New York City in the 1940’s. The three mail dancers, dressed in their crisp white sailor uniforms, playfully compete for the attention of some women in the bar. The smooth movement and engaging interactions between the dancers portray a vibrant Broadway feel.

ELA, Rhapsody in Blue is a newly choreographed number by Principal Dancer, Paulo Arrais’ which made its World Premiere earlier this year. Arrais’ piece features 14 male dancers dressed all in black and one central female dancer, a vision in white. Again, backed by the NAC orchestra, this contemporary sultry number is a celebration of an independent strong woman and her experience of rising against all odds. It truly is an inspired vision that showcases strength and grace and allows for an emotional connection with the performance.

Blake Works I is another ensemble piece that features 21 dancers and was a true joy to watch. This cohesive ensemble seamlessly moves between being en pointe and not with beautiful synchronicity. It is a light hearted and joyous number that is set perfectly to the music of British musician James Blake. It feels like a true celebration of dance and is the perfect ending to what has been an extraordinary evening at the National Arts Center.
