Last Saturday evening, Serena Ryder finished off the Ontario leg of her tour at Kingston’s Grand Theatre and she was a huge hit!

Seven time Juno winner Serena Ryder made another stop in Kingston on her current tour. This was the last stop on the Ontario itinerary, she is now heading into the maritimes for a series of shows finishing off in Moncton on December 4th.

CBC Radio aired a concert Serena played in Wakefield, Quebec early in her career and subsequently became the album, Serena Ryder Live. I heard that concert and was immediately drawn to her amazing voice. A short time later, she came to this very same theatre in Kingston and I was there. No matter how many times I see her in concert, Serena continues to wow me with her talent, not only as a singer but also as a songwriter.

Saturday night, Serena played acoustically, which she often does, but the current tour is all acoustic. I do love a full band sound, but Serena has such a powerful voice, the band isn’t needed. Smaller, more intimate shows often show you a whole different side of a performer and this was the case on this tour.

The setlist was weighted more toward her older music like “Weak In The Knees”, “It’s No Mistake” and “What I Wouldn’t Do” but she still sprinkled in some of her newest album, The Art Of Falling Apart. She played a selection including “Better Now” and “Waterfall”, my personal favourite from the new album.

Serena has made no secret of the fact that the new album was about her personal journey of mental wellness and she has become something of a spokesperson for the cause. She openly discusses difficult things and tries to make a difference for others.

Onstage, Serena’s confidence level has always been high but she seems even more so now. Her enthusiasm and love for her music is infectious and makes it a pleasure to experience. It was great to see Serena back doing what she loves to do most.
