English classical crossover soprano, singer, songwriter, actress, dancer and musician Sarah Brightman visited Toronto in support of her latest album HYMN. The show was a spectacle, and the singing was anything but secondary. It was a Sarah Brightman concert, after all. That’s what the English soprano promises, and delivers, to her fans. Nothing short of an unforgettable spectacle.

After the first three pieces, Sarah made brief introduction, and let the audience know what they were in for the rest of the night.  She sang some of her older material as well as pieces from her new release in a very comfortable 2 set format.

The accompanying band and orchestra, seemed to be the perfect complement to Sarah’s voice. During her performance of Canto Per Noi,, a duet with Rumanian  tenor Narcis Iustin Ianău, the pair just seemed to lose themselves in each other in ways that only Sarah could have done. It was a joy to listen to both of them give it all on stage for what seemed such a brief moment.

The second set was opened with Hymn; composed by none other than maestro Ennio Morricone. Just before performing Tu Che M’ai Preso Il Cuore, she shared with the audience that it was when she heard Italian tenor, Luciano Pavarotti perform that same piece that she had to add it to her repertoire. It was nothing short of amazing.

Brightman, who inhabited the role of Christine Daaé in the original production of The Phantom of the Opera, revisited Andrew Lloyd Webber’s crowning achievement in grand style, with dramatic help from french pop opera singer Vincet Niclo.

As the show came to a close, I was sad that it was over but happy that I had the opportunity to see her perform live.

Until next time.
