Los Angeles-based singer/songwriter Ryan Santiago is Royal & The Serpent and her career has been one continuous viral rise since her start in 2017 with the independent release of “Temperance” followed by “Together” in 2018. She signed with Atlantic Records at the end of 2019, releasing “Overwhelmed” as her first single for the label in June 2020. The single spent 22 weeks on Billboard’s Alternative Airplay chart and is now RIAA- certified gold.

Her most recent EP  IF I DIED WOULD ANYONE CARE, released in January of this year, features the singles “PHUCKBOI REJECTS” and “I’M NOT SORRY” as well as four brand new tracks.

Royal & the Serpent was support last night for grandson at The Newport Music Hall in Columbus, Ohio. When I arrived, the crowd to get in was a block and a half long. The venue filled pretty quickly, all the way back behind the soundboard which is not rare but obviously the crowd knew what was coming and were absolutely ready. Even another photographer told me she had seen Royal & the Serpent live and said it was going to be a high energy show.

Indeed it was, from the very beginning Royal & The Serpent was all over the stage, spinning and kicking and taking the crowd on a wild frantic pop-punk art rock ride. They responded loudly, getting into the show and pushing forward, especially when grandson jumped onto the stage! The 45 minute set featured tracks “I Can’t Get High”, I’m Not Sorry”, Happier In Hell”, “a Killers cover of “Mr Brightside” and others.

Royal & the Serpent closed out the night with “Overwhelmed” which gave everyone a chance to blow off some of the pandemic-induced anxiety, getting back to a sense of normalcy with respect to the need for this – for live music, crowds and unity.
