Sunday nights are usually pretty low-key and I spend them catching up on a week of music.  But this past Sunday night I spent at Maxwell’s in Waterloo, ON watching 2 very impressive artists.   Tim Chaisson of PEI and Jessica Mitchell of London, ON took to the intimate stage in a fantastic venue.    This was my first chance to make to a show at the new venue and to be frank… Nice set up my only complaint would be in a space that size its better to push everyone to the front so there isn’t a huge space between artist and fans.   This was more a song writers setting which I LOVED… Getting to see artists this talented infant of 75 maximum in the place was a real pleasure.

The night started off with local boy Scotty James hitting the stage.  Unfortunately I didn’t arrive early enough to catch Scotty but one of the ladies I was sitting beside gave him a solid 2 thumbs up.  So we will have to make a better effort next time we have the chance to see Scotty.   Next up was Jessica Mitchell.   Now for those of you who aren’t familiar with Miss Mitchell spent the last 12 months touring with Tom Cochrane and playing an integral role on that tour.  She currently has her own single at radio Grown Up Things that has just been released nationally and the way the movement in country music is headed I think Jessica has some real stay power in those aspects.

Her performance on this night was impeccable.  Hearing people in the audience ask each other who she was and where she was from is always a good indication whether the crowd enjoyed her set.   I personally could listen to this woman belt out tune after tune in a live setting.  I truly believe she is a LIVE performance type artist.   Don’t get me wrong the single of Grown Up Things is great but hearing her slightly raspy sound echo over a live PA or heck for as lucky as I am, amongst some really cool ducks on the shores of Lake Ontario while filming her Mason Jar Session.   Jessica’ gave us a few great songs along with a great cover of a Bad Company Song called ready for it… Bad Company which we may or may not have footage of,  depending if Miss Mitchell wants that posted.  (Stay Tuned)

Next to hit the stage was the man of the hour… Tim Chaisson.   Now I have had a chance to chat with Tim earlier this year just before he was to hit the stage at Canadian Place in Toronto.    I have owned Tim’s album and it seems to be one of those go to album for me when in need of a little inspiration or just to feel good about life.

Tonight Tim Chaission along with sidekick Koady Chaisson on banjo, bass, harmonica, guitar, washboard and kitchen sink.  Ok not the last two but man these boys are talented.   Tim is another one of those artists that you just have to see live.  I could give you long list of tracks that he played for us but honestly just go see a show.  Live for that moment when the young lad from PEI takes the stage and mesmerized us for 70+ min of a complete mashup of East Coast / Celtic/ Country music.   Along with the great stories inbetween each song it’s just a an all around fantastic experience.

The boys played off each other extremely well and that life long chemistry that family was clear on this night.  From poking fun at one another to telling us how they just released a new album together along with another young fella with the name The East Pointers which is really a mix of songs with most being instrumental which is a bit of a departure for Tim but once you listen to that roots / celtic sound you will be hooked.  East Pointers are set to take the stage in Toronto later next month at the Hugh’s Room so don’t be shy and check that show out.   Now on a personal note my favourite from the show,  I know this is Tim’s big hit these days but Crushed is one hell of a song and just love the live performance on it.   I want to thank Maxwell’s for hosting us on a Sunday night.  And also want to thank both Tim & Jessica for the great show.
