I imagine that someday I will stop being amazed by the amount of singer/songwriter talent hidden in this city. That day has not come yet for me, although maybe it has something to do with me doing most of my swimming in the hard rock pool.
I found myself pleasantly surprised to find a healthy crowd of musicians and friends filling LIVE on Elgin on a cold Wednesday night. The third annual Beards for Breast fundraising event began with semi-circle of bearded acoustic wielding players taking the stage, and from there the night took off. Taking turns playing original songs and swapping anecdotes, the group kept the audience’s attention all night.
Beards for Breasts is an annual fundraiser organized by local guitarist and songwriter Jeff Logan aka Jasper Bridge in support of breast cancer. The title is a play on words to the amazing initiative started by Ana Miura and Amanda Rheaume: Babes4Breasts.
The concept is simple:
1) Rather than running, Jeff takes pledges to shave his beard!
2) A group of Bearded Singer Songwriters take the stage to share their songs in an annual fundraising concert.
All proceeds raised at Beards for Breasts are donated to the Babes4Breasts Head Start Program at the Ottawa Integrative Cancer Centre which supports newly diagnosed women on their journey with breast cancer.
If you are in need of some new music in your life, and haven’t seen Jeff Logan, Jamie Douglas, Sean Tansey, Shawn Tavenier or their respective bands (Jasper Bridge, Lost to the River, Silver Creek or The Power Goats) before, make sure to check one or all of these guys out. They’re all talented, hardworking, and many have full bands they play with as well. You will not be disappointed by the hidden gems Ottawa’s music scene is hiding, I certainly wasn’t. Better yet take a trip down to LIVE on Elgin and discover a new favourite tonight.
